Our Living Oceans

Our Living Oceans (OLO) provides a report card to the Nation on the biological health of U.S. living marine resources. Since 1991, OLO has presented an overview of principal fishery and protected resource stock assessments conducted by NOAA Fisheries. In 1992, feature articles were added to highlight issues impacting the agency’s assessment, management, and/or field activities of note. Past features have covered the 1991-1992 El Nino, Bycatch Problems and Fishery Management, Atlantic Striped Bass, Pacific Northwest Salmon, 1994 Marine Mammal Protection Act Amendments, the Precautionary Approach, New England Groundfish, and a Status Review of King Mackerel in the Gulf of Mexico.

The full set of OLO editions spans a period of tremendous change in the management of living marine resources in the United States. Since the first edition was published, there have been several profound legal and conceptual changes in the management landscape—notably, major revisions to the Marine Mammal Protection Act (1994) and the Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act (1996). OLO is neither mandated nor intended to fulfill any legal requirement. Rather, they are written to provide an overview of, and a perspective on a very complex subject for the interested reader.
